Engraving Outside of Ring
The name being engraved is Matakatea, a name of great mana (honour). Among the notable people to bear this name was Chief Wiremu Kingi Matakatea.
This ring is being engraved using a diamond engraving tip. It is being held in plastic cones in an IS400 computerised engraving machine. The cones have double sided tape on them which helps to grip the ring. The machine spins the ring as the tip goes up and down. It engraves by penetrating the surface of the ring and spreading the metal out of the way. That's why we call it diamond drag engraving.
